Google "makeup for men" and the results yield a comically defensive tone in the popular discourse around men wearing makeup. "Undercover" and "undetectable" makeup tutorials rear their ugly heads; "camo concealer" is a thing. Yet the announcement of James Charles as CoverGirl's newest spokesperson proves there's a new generation of men ready to make makeup their own. We worked with makeup and visual artist Marcelo Gutierrez to get the scoop and create three easy-breezy beauty looks that'll take you from day to night—undercover lovers need not apply.

This is perfect for work, dates, interviews etc.—any time you want to impress.

"The approach to Nay’s look is something I would do for an everyday healthy glow," notes Gutierrez. "It’s all about hydrating and the 'your skin, but better' look. Simple steps to even out skin tone and conceal discoloration and blemishes while adding warmth and life with some blush and a tinted lip balm. This is perfect for work, dates, interviews, etc.—any time you want to impress."

"I don't like to cover up too much of the natural color under the eye; I think that looks nice," says Gutierrez. He recommends smudging on eyeshadow and then blending for increased intensity at the lash line. To see this look in action, watch the video above.

"On Jameson we did a more moody, vampy look," says Gutierrez. "Something you could wear both day and night. Easy to recreate and not fussy at all. The entire point is to look brooding, sultry and a little bit dangerous. I’d wear this for dinner parties, a night out, or on a date—think about everything that comes along with a nice glass of red wine."

I love to wear glitter or some kind of highlight on my eyelids when I go out. When the light hits your face it’s almost impossible to look away.

"With the pop metallic shadows, glittery eyes, glossy lips and deep blush, Tariq's look is perfect for catching all the right light," says Gutierrez. Makeup is a very personal experience. It’s all just you looking into the mirror and embracing or enhancing who you are.
